Botox injections continue to be the single most common aesthetic procedure performed in men and women along with the growth in the use of injectable dermal fillers. Botox and injectable dermal fillers comprise over 50% of all nonsurgical aesthetic procedures. With Botox as a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure for wrinkles and with over 6.7 million procedures having been performed, is a 6 percent growth from 2013 to 2014 and continues to grow.

Wrinkles are described as static and or dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are cause by contracting muscles under the skin that can cause frown lines in the forehead, those number 11’s between the brows and crows feet. On the other hand Static wrinkles are those wrinkles that are on your face when not making any expressions caused by muscle contraction. These are generally the result of photoaging of the skin either caused by sun or aging. This causes the skin to loose its elasticity and collagen resulting in wrinkles at rest giving one the appearance of being angry or tired all the time. Botox combined with fractional skin resurfacing for sun damaged and aged skin, will set your clock back many years

Botox injections can be used on the face and for chin dimpling, bunny nose wrinkles, neck lines that form from the platysmal bands and downward frown to corners of the mouth from the angularis muscle tensing.

Botox or Injectable Dermal Fillers?

One of the more important changes in facial rejuvenation has been from the two-dimensional face which focuses on facial lines and immobilization of the corresponding muscle with Botox to the three-dimensional face which focuses on facial aging and particularly volume loss and its effect on treatment approach. Fillers used in conjunction with Botox injections make it possible to rejuvenate the face from a three-dimensional rather than a two-dimensional approach, thereby providing more pleasing, longer-lasting outcomes.

How long does it last?

After your treatment with Botox you will note a gradual visible improvement of your lines and wrinkles over the next 7-10 days. Your treatment will last approximately 3-4 months and with continued treatments you will notice continued improvement of your wrinkles. This is generally from a weakening of the underlying muscle that causes the wrinkle on the skin above. It is similar to having your arm in a cast for a period of time and removing the cast the arm is weak and needs time to recover. Likewise, if you stop having Botox treatments there will be a gradual return of your lines. This is why patients that regularly get Botox treatments notice the effect seems to last longer between subsequent treatments.
