Chemical Peels Plano

The skin comprises of many different cells that constantly die and are then replaced by new ones from bottom layers of the epidermis. With age this process slows down and as a result the appearance of the skin deteriorates. Thankfully, the modern cosmetic industry has come up with a solution to tackle the damage caused by sun, weather, stress, age and other factors – chemical peels. Dr. Caglia specializes in the use of Chemical Peels to exfoliate dead and aged skin as well as a wide range of skin issues, such as acne scars, enlarged pores, sun pigmentation, brown spots and melasma.

Chemical peels are offered as a common skin rejuvenation and skin maintenance treatment in Plano, Frisco, Allen and McKinney Tx.

Chemical Peel’s Effects

Chemical Peels are a technique for controlled exfoliation of skin cells. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in America. A chemical solution is administered to the skin to remove dead and damaged skin and reveal the new, regenerated layer underneath. Our doctors specialize in chemical peels that target wrinkling, hyperpigmentation, brown spots (liver spots, lentigos , age spots), freckles, melasma and acne scars. This procedure is available for patients from Dallas and the surrounding areas.

At your initial consultation with your doctor he will ask a series of questions on your medical history, lifestyle choices, habits and procedure expectations. Depending on your skin tone and condition you may be subject to additional testing to determine if you are a suitable candidate for a chemical peel. Your doctor will then introduce you to the various options for chemical peels and recommend the solution most suited to your situation.

It’s important to disclose all history of viral infections, sun sensitivity, other skin treatments and/or medicine intake in the last 48 hours.

When is a chemical peel appropriate?

Chemical peels are known to improve many skin conditions, such as:

  • Acne Scars
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Pigmentation spots
  • Sun-damage
  • Brown Spots
  • Age spots
  • Freckles

However, a chemical peel cannot substitute laser skin resurfacing or a facelift as it does not eliminate excessive or saggy skin. In general it is recommended that this procedure is combined with either of the other two, including additional use of Botox and Dermal Fillers for optimal results.

What does the treatment consist of?

The majority of chemical peels use some sort of acid to achieve the desired result. Based on your skin type and condition the doctor will decide on a light, medium or deep chemical peel. One solution or a mix of chemicals (glycolic acid, beta lift, Jessner, TCA will be used to provoke the peeling of and separation of the outer layers of the skin. Then the new, rejuvenated skin from underneath will gradually be revealed over the next couple of days.

Most patients report a warm, burning and slightly stinging sensation during the procedure. Oral sedation may be required with deeper peels.

What can I expect after treatment?

After a chemical peel, Dr. Caglia advises that reactions are very similar to those of sunburn, ranging from mild to strong discomfort. As a general rule deeper peels require longer recovery.

After a light skin peel the skin appears reddish with a bit of scaling. Medium and deep peels can be followed by swelling and a darker red to maroon coloration. Regular moisturizing is necessary for the skin to heal and sun exposure is prohibited. In the course of a week the peel will change color to brown and begin peeling. Initially, the new skin will be pink and tender, but it will gradually fade over the next few days to possibly several weeks depending on the type of peel. Cosmetics are allowed after about a couple of weeks. The new skin feels smoother and tighter and appears slightly lighter than before the procedure.

Keep in mind that new skin is sensitive and prone to hyperpigmentation and injury. Apply sun cream of at least SPF 30 that blocks UVA and UVB rays before going outside. The physician will then prescribe a skin-care program to follow at home to ensure the skin is healing properly.
