A woman’s lips are one of her most powerful weapons, a sign of her powerful sensuality. And full, plump lips have always been particularly desired by men and women alike.

Not everyone is blessed with a pair of beautiful luscious lips, but fortunately medicine has come a long way to be able to correct this. Not only that, but signs of aging, lifestyle choices and sun deteriorate the appearance of your lips.

Dr. Caglia specializes in injectable Dermal Filler treatments and lip augmentation for fast, visible, natural appearing results for patients in Dallas and surrounding suburban areas of Plano, Frisco, Allen and McKinney Tx. We work with the latest hyaluronic acid injectable dermal gel fillers called Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, and Restylane Lyft that will enhance and augment thin lips by adding volume and correcting shape. Other fillers you may have heard of are Artefill/Bellafill, Sculptra, and Radiesse while great for other areas of the body are not recommended for use in the lips.

What options do I have for treatment?

Lip rejuvenation and enhancement are one of the most common cosmetic procedures nowadays. There are procedures that can be performed with a Fractional CO2 Skin Resurfacing laser for upper lip lines and natural injectable gel dermal fillers or synthetic implants. The fillers we use today are soft, safe and natural upon touch.

Which product is right for me?

Before choosing a particular procedure or product you need to have a consultation to determine your lip shape, your expectations and the time period you’ll want the effect to last. Your doctor will then discuss a treatment plan with you on your options and help you pick the one for your desired results.

Lip Enhancer – Injectable

Hyaluronic acid fillers are the latest innovation in the cosmetic industry for lip enhancement. They are safe, durable and require no skin testing. Juvéderm, Juvéderm Ultra Plus with Lidocaine, as well as Restylane and Perlane are just some of the popular dermal fillers doctors work with and are all inserted with a local anesthetic such as lidocaine for a pain-free procedure.

Fat Transfer

Another name for this procedure is micro-lipoinjection or fat transplantation, this procedure is used to plump up the lips using your own fat taken from other parts of your body. This transfer is safe, natural and effective in restoring diminished and damaged dermal deficiencies.

Lip Implants

Implants made of “EPTFE” (expanded polytetrafluorethylene) are a safe, long-lasting solution for enhancement of lips.

AlloDerm is another dermal implant originally utilized in the treatment of burns, and now it is applied in cosmetic procedures to improve the appearance of aged or misshapen lips.

Silicone Oil

Silicone oil remains an unpopular choice for lip augmentation. It carries significant risks and for that reason is only FDA-approved as a medical device and not as filler.

Laser Treatments

In some cases it is recommended to combine lip augmentation and CO2 fractional laser resurfacing or a different laser treatment for better treatment of the finer edges of the lip. The laser stimulates formation of new collagen beneath the skin and tightening of existing collagen to resurface and decrease lip lines.

What should be expected during recovery?

After a lip augmentation, Dr. Caglia advises that your lips may remain swollen for a few hours to several days. You may resume your activities within several hours, but a follow-up treatment may be required.

Implants cause only minimal discomfort and pain. Small stitches may be needed, but will be removed in a few days. The swelling may last up to a week after the procedure, but cold compresses and keeping your head elevated will significantly reduce it. In some cases you may be prescribed medication. Eating and brushing may cause some discomfort for a few days.

Generally, it takes a longer time to recover after a lip rejuvenation procedure. It is essential to moisturize regularly with Aquaphor ointment in the first two weeks. In some cases patients are prescribed medication to control the discomfort. Initial redness will subside in the following weeks to a pale pink tone.
