Do you ever sweat too much? Do you sometimes wonder why this happens or how to make it go away? Does excessive sweating interfere with your daily activities? Are unpleasant stains exposed every time you raise your arms... even in normal situations? Do you have cold and clammy hands or feet? Are your clothes ruined or stained by underarm sweat?  Now you can get the same Botox treatment the Hollywood stars and starlets get with no red carpet perspiration!

Nearly 2.8 percent or approximately 3 milion Americans suffer from an excessive sweating condition called hyperhidrosis.  In Asian communities and countries, the incidence is about double that level.  It's estimated that less than half of affected Americans have sought treatment - perhaps because they don't know treatment is available. Now you can ask Dr. Caglia if BOTOX® treatment is right for you for your excessive sweating. Dr. Caglia performs BOTOX procedures for patients from the Dallas area including the surrounding cities of Plano, Allen, Frisco, Mckinney, Richardson, Southlake, Rockwall, Grapevine,  Fort Worth, Addison, Garland, Irving, Mesquite, White Rock, and DFW, Texas.  These treatment areas include, hands, underarms, feet and more rarely craniofacial (scalp and face) hyperhidrosis.

Dr. Caglia now treats the condition with Botox that causes excessive sweat to be produced by your sweat glands that are overstimulated by the sympathetic nervous system. The condition can leave the affected areas constantly wet making your everyday activities difficult to carry on, and cause embarrassment to the sufferer and interfere with your job or social life. Chronic sweating of hands and feet may cause maceration of the skin with fungal or bacterial infections and an adverse odor. The good news is that we now offer a quick and easy treatment using BOTOX. Botox is a neurotoxin that is normally used to treat facial frowns and wrinkles to relax the muscles, however it has been proven to effectively prevent the sweat glands from producing excess levels of sweat. This occurs because Botox prevents the release of the neurotransmitter Acetylcholine at the presynaptic nerve ending and if Acetylcholine is not released the sweat glands will not be stimulated and will not secrete bodily salts and water, which we refer to as sweat.

The most common areas for treatment include:

  • Palmar Hyperhidrosis affects palms (hands)
  • Axillary Hyperhidrosis affects underarms (armpits)
  • Plantar Hyperhidrosis affects soles (feet)
  • Craniofacial Hyperhidrosis affects head (Scalp and Face)

In some area such as hands, feet and underarms we perform a test called Minors Starch Iodine test.  First we apply Betadine to the area affected and then brush on corn starch. When the patient starts to sweat the area will turn blue-black.  This test shows the physician exactly where most of the sweating in from in the affected area.

The area to be treated is cleaned with alcohol and an anesthetic cream is placed for approximately 30-45 minutes.  Then with a tiny needle with Botox is placed under the skin (dermis) causing the formation of a tiny bleb (a bulge in the plasma membrane of a cell) spaced about 1-2 cm apart in the area of excessive sweating depending on the location.  After injections you can continue your normal activities.  There should be a decrease in sweating in approximately 5-10 days, but maximum at 2 weeks.  Treatment can last approximately 9 months and some patients that repeat their Botox treatments on a regular basis notice an increase in the interval between treatments.

Treatment of the hands and feet are more sensitive and may require ice or oral sedation and in some cases for feet IV sedation.

Hyperhidrosis treatment with Botox is quick and simple to perform and can reduce or almost eliminate sweating for up to 9 months or more.

If you have concerns about how much you sweat or think you may be sweating too much, even when you don't feel warm, then you may have hyperhidrosis. Dr. Caglia would be glad to help you with this condition to get your sweating under control.
